| Approximately once a week, only reblooming rose
bushes should have their spent flowers removed (deadheaded).
When deadheading, pay
attention to pruning basic: cut the stem with dead flowers off the cane just above the
first set of five leaflets. The cut should be on a slant, downward to the inside of the
shrub. If the cane is week, cut back further to strong wood that can support a new flower.
If the weather has been dry or no rain is forecasted for several days then give the
plant a slow deep watering.
About 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost date, stop deadheading. It is healthier to
allow the rose bush to form hips (Seed pods). The formation of hips, help to prepare the
plant's) for its dormant period and increases its winter hardiness. |
